What is Get in Line?
Get in Line is a graduate student project at Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center. It is focused on bringing exciting interactions to queue lines and waiting environments.
What technology do you use?
Our cellular technology service is provided by a company called Megaphone. We’ve just integrated DMX (digital multiplexing) protocol into our tech architecture and we’re investigating military-grade GPS units.
Who gets to play the games?
Currently, anyone waiting in a Get in Line queue can play! Our experiences utilize cell phones and human brain power, so you can ‘opt in’ or ‘opt out’ of play, it’s up to you!
How much does it cost to play a Get in Line game?
Get in Line cell phone-based games cost nothing to play other than minutes from your cell phone plan. You’d be burning one minute of your cell phone plan per minute of gaming. Not to worry though, we offer more than just games so you won’t be spending all your minutes in line!
Cool. I want Get in Line in my theme park or for my next event. How do I go about doing that?

This is super cool! But…is this just a research project at a school?
Although there is a lot of research and theory behind Get in Line, this project has deliverables! Last semester, we implemented our prototype on the Building Virtual Worlds Show queue at Carnegie Mellon University to an excited crowd. This semester, we are gearing to offer our new Get in Line products to more clients…stay tuned to learn more!
What’s next for this project?
Moving into our second semester of development, we are working on integrating exciting new technology into the current Get in Line experience, such as DMX and GPS units. Another feature is a ‘lifetime achievement’ and avatar system that will allow guests to track their progress as they play . This framework will open up a new realm of possibilities bridging real-world location-based entertainment to online gaming and social networking.
I have a GREAT idea for Get in Line! How do I tell you?
We love hearing from you about what you think should be done with queue lines! Feel free to visit our Contact page or email us directly at info@getinlinegames.com
Where did this project come from?
This project was a dream three graduate students came up with while they were complaining about terrible shopping experiences over Christmas break. Believing that something should be done about the queue catastrophe, they put their heads together and pitched the project to Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center, which was subsequently approved.
Who are you people anyway?
We love that question. We’re a bunch of graduate students at Carnegie Mellon University. For more information, visit the Team page.
